One of the most powerful things that you can do to help further your goals in any arena in life is to give of yourself without any expectation of return.
This may seem like a strange thing to talk about in a health and wellness article, but it is an important and salient point. Far too often, as we go through day-to-day life, we become focused on ourselves, to the extent where the wants and needs of others, especially those people that we come into contact with the most, disappear from our radar screen.
And who can blame us? Life today moves at an incredibly fast pace, and sometimes all we can do to take care of ourselves, because that's all we have the energy for. And yet, being caught up in that way of thinking not only robs others of our contributions, it robs us of the benefits that accrue to us from contributing to others.
There is an old saying, "you get what you give". Put another way, what goes around, comes around. How many of us have walked down the street and seen a homeless man or woman begging for money and kept on walking? How many of us have had a chance to contribute some of your time to a charity like Sick Kids, or Big Brothers, and thought to ourselves, "I am to busy?" or "I Have no time?", or some other such variation.
Most of us have done this, and it does not make us bad people. It just cuts us off from other people, and from our humanity. If we are truly honest with ourselves, we know that we feel a separation from others when we turn our backs to them.
Now, no one can say yes to every request that comes their way, because it will overwhelm them. But you can say yes to some requests, and you can show kindness in many little ways every day. Stop a fireman or policewoman man and than k them for putting their lives on the line for the rest of us. Give a homeless man a quarter, or buy him a sandwich. Hug your spouse, mom, dad, brother, sister, and friend.
Do 1 act of anonymous generosity for someone else every day, where the recipient of your generosity won't even know you are their benefactor. In the Tim Horton's drive through, buy the next person their coffee. Wipe the sink clean the sink in a washroom after you wash your hands. Lay down loonies and toonies on street corers, where someone else can easily spot it and pick it up
You will not only feel better, but an amazing thing will happen. The universe will give you what you want, and this includes helping you accomplish your goals, in fitness, and in life.
